As Oregonians, we are committed to preserving the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). The dedicated professionals who work at DOGAMI are responsible for the scientific research and data collection that provides Oregon communities with critical information about landslides, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, coastal hazards, and more to keep us safe. They also regulate mining, mineral exploration, natural gas, and geothermal resources, providing a critical public safeguard on the private sector.
The unique services DOGAMI provides have never been more important. We are increasingly aware of the Cascadia earthquake hazards and impacts of natural disasters on communities across Oregon. Losing funding for DOGAMI or dissolving the agency will set us back when we should be looking forward.
Instead of cutting the agency’s budget, we call on the Oregon Legislature to invest in this vital agency and its employees. The Legislature and other stakeholders should work together for a stable future for DOGAMI, in order to build a more resilient Oregon.
